The grapes for the wines are grown and made in the Douro Valley, however the maturation is in the port city of Porto. Porto in general is where you will find the offices of all the major Port houses, this means you can visit and taste port from all the Port houses in the city of Porto without venturing out to the Douro Valley which is 3-4 hours drive in land (east). However you can still head out to the Douro Valley in which you can still taste port from the various Port houses and visit their vineyards, but you will need to travel future between Port houses compared to walking between them in the city of Porto.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Climate<\/strong><\/span>: The Douro Valley is general has a Warm Continental Climate<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Grapes<\/strong><\/span>: There are five main varieties which are all black grapes used in the production of premium port, which are\n<ul>\n<li>Touriga Franca<\/li>\n<li>Tinta Roriz (same as Tempranillo in Spain)<\/li>\n<li>Tinta Barroca<\/li>\n<li>Touriga Nacional<\/li>\n<li>Tinta C\u00e3o<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Wine Style<\/strong><\/span>: Port wine, which is a type of fortified wine is what Porto and the Douro Valley is renowned for, however due to market forces (such as the decline in popularity of Port wine), more wineries are also producing still wines, using the same grapes that was destined for Port wine. This recent change has some wine drinkers flocking to consume still wines from the Douro valley due to the great value this represents.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Size and Yield<\/strong><\/span>: The Douro valley is approx 43,000 ha under vines<sup>1 <\/sup>, the region is divided into the following 3 sub-regions from west to east\n<ul>\n<li>Baixo Corgo (Lower Corgo): 13,000 ha under vines - planted first, but lower quality compared to the other two sub-regions<\/li>\n<li>Cima Corgo (Upper Corgo): 20,000 ha under vines - majority of the famous <i id=\"mwdA\">Quintas<\/i> are located<\/li>\n<li>Douro Superior (Upper Douro): 10,000 ha under vines - hottest and driest, spanning to the Spanish border<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Winery<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Porto<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Located on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro River in Porto City, all the Port houses will have a tasting room here. Just go and walk in and try! They all have a charge and some have tasting as part of the winery tour. Here are some that I had tried and would recommend for you to try too!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kopke Wine House (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/5uiVsPjAR2LZbfQD6?g_st=ic\">map<\/a>) - Did their wine flight tasting with a great view over looking the river<\/li>\n<li>Sandeman (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/or7wEpg1Dxugtrog7?g_st=ic\">map<\/a>) - One of the biggest and well known Port house, their wine tour is worth the visit into their maturation cellar, very nice!<\/li>\n<li>Wine shop Quinta do Noval - Gaia (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/dCctpbZwyA56sbZ3A?g_st=ic\">map<\/a>) - Tasting was quite good, you get to pick the flight you want and can add in single glass tasting too<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Douro Valley<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.symington.com\/\">Quinta do Bomfim<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/REixYaWyGJtJwYW17?g_st=ic\">map<\/a>) - One of the larger Port houses <a href=\"https:\/\/cykp.biz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Douro-Quinta-do-Bomfim-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1575 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cykp.biz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Douro-Quinta-do-Bomfim-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cykp.biz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Douro-Quinta-do-Bomfim-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cykp.biz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Douro-Quinta-do-Bomfim-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cykp.biz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Douro-Quinta-do-Bomfim-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cykp.biz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Douro-Quinta-do-Bomfim-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cykp.biz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Douro-Quinta-do-Bomfim-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>with brands such as Grahams, Dows and Warre\u2019s to name a few. They also have a hotel on site too! The winery tour is quite good, with a tasting of both still and port wines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Accommodation<\/h3>\n<p>Stayed in the Sheraton Porto Hotel &amp; Spa (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/?q=Sheraton%20Porto%20Hotel%20%26%20Spa,%20R.%20do%20Ten.%20Valadim%20146,%204100-476%20Porto,%20Portugal&amp;ftid=0xd24659ed89e3287:0x4835fbb931080fd2&amp;entry=gps&amp;shh=CAE&amp;lucs=,94297699,94231188,94280568,47071704,94218641,100808654,94282134,100813464,94286869&amp;g_st=ic\">map<\/a>) which is outside of the main tourist areas and in the business district of Porto, but there are restaurants nearby. Super yummy!<\/li>\n<li>Restaurante Casa Dias (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/CRFmtfuPF1CJveBQ9?g_st=ic\">map<\/a>) -This small family run restaurant on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro river (where the Port houses are located) is a gem! The food is authentic and really good! Within the complex there is also a wine tasting experience run by the Portuguese tourism board and a bar called Angel's Share (<a
